NAGR staff, activists in Iowa; confront candidate

Ames, IA - As we reported last week, the staff for the National Association for Gun Rights and a small army of volunteers and activists traveled to Ames, Iowa for the Republican Straw Poll.

Our goal is simple: hold politicians accountable on the gun issue, and move the GOP to the right... in favor of freedom.

We believe that election time is the best opportunity to lobby candidates for office, whether they are your local State Representative or candidate to be the leader of the free world.

Iowa is the best place to lobby candidates for President. They are uniquely vulnerable at this time, where they must answer to the very base of the GOP.

You might be astonished to know, however, that Iowa is not the haven of gun owners -- or, at least its laws indicate that gun owners have been asleep.

To purchase a handgun, you must first get a permit from the Department of Public Safety, which is only valid for one year. The state bans NFA weapons (machineguns), doesn't allow citizens to carry handguns in their vehicles, and they have no concealed carry law to speak of. Even worse, many "gun rights activists" in Iowa willingly accept these draconian, California-like laws.

NAGR confronts Romney in Iowa

Today at the Iowa State Fair, NAGR Executive Director Dudley Brown confronted Governor Romney on NBC Nightly News (national television), asking the Romney if he had changed his mind about gun control.

Watch the video:

NAGR staff and volunteers, in conjunction with the newly formed Iowa Gun Owners, have been asking the tough questions. Governor Romney has hosted many "Ask Mitt Anything" sessions, however when NAGR staffer Luke O'Dell confronted Romney about his continued support for a ban on assault weapons, he quickly dodged the question.

Later, Romney bragged to his radical supporters about dodging the tough questions.

Brown, O'Dell and a small army of gun rights volunteers have shadowed Romney, distributing literature to expose his anti-gun agenda.

Why focus on Romney?

Governor Romney is the favorite for the Straw Poll, and is leading the polls in many of the early primary states. And right now, it looks like Romney could win the GOP nomination.

Why is that so distressing? Shouldn’t we simply be worried about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton? The truth – that you won’t hear from mainstream media or from liberal party hacks – is that an anti-gun Republican candidate for President can’t win. And if Romney or Giuliani win the GOP nomination, Hillary Clinton will be our next President. That alone should motivate gun owners to work hard to make certain the GOP nominates a candidate that is acceptable to 40-50% of the GOP volunteer/contributor base, namely gun owners.

Unfortunately, equally anti-gun Rudy Giuliani declined to participate in this straw poll. That means someone – the NRA certainly isn’t going to do it – must expose these anti-gun candidates and their vile records.

Straw Poll

Saturday is the actual Ames, Iowa Straw Poll. NAGR and Iowa Gun Owners volunteers will be mobilizing pro-gun voter and fight the anti-gun agendas of candidates like Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani (who is still on the ballot).
We’ll report back from the battlefront tomorrow.
