Dear Fellow Patriot,
Have you heard the news?
NAGR’s new legislation restoring your gun rights has been introduced in Congress.
Brought by gun rights champions, U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Congressman Steve King (R-IA), it’s called the “Silencers Helping Us Save Hearing Act” or “SHUSH Act”(S.1505 and H.R.3139), and ends the foolish Federal control on sound suppressors.
Thanks to your work, we’ve repealed both the Social Security Gun Ban and the Lead Ammo Ban.
We’re also making strong progress against the Veterans Gun Ban.
Now it’s time to move forward to repeal some of America’s long-standing restrictions on the Second Amendment.
The first step is to remove ALL unconstitutional restrictions on suppressors.
NAGR’s SHUSH Act recognizes one simple truth: suppressors are nothing more than accessories. They are no different than a magazine or a scope, and should be treated as such.
Currently, suppressors are heavily regulated -- just like machine guns and grenades -- under the 1934 National Firearms Act.
And unfortunately, previous legislation to fix this problem didn’t actually get the job done completely.
Until NAGR’s King/Lee bill, the Hearing Protection Act still treated suppressors like long guns, requiring a background check (registration).
This sets a very dangerous precedent for restrictions on accessories, and would almost certainly lead to a new push for federal restrictions on magazines, gun stocks, optics, ammo, etc.
That’s why the National Association for Gun Rights asked Sen. Lee and Rep. King to introduce the SHUSH Act.
Under this legislation, buying a suppressor would be like buying a magazine or scope.
No expensive tax stamp, no 9-month wait, no registration.
Just pure freedom.
That’s why I’m counting on you to sign your petition in support of the “Silencers Helping Us Save Hearing Act.”
These petitions are part of the National Association for Gun Rights’ massive nationwide effort to turn up the heat on Congress.
As you’ll see below, this program won’t be cheap, so I’m also hoping you can dig deep and make your most generous contribution after signing.
Already under way, our cutting edge plan consists of:
1) Using mail and email to contact up to 12 million Americans from all over the country to alert them to the gun grabbers’ new economic war on guns;
2) Launching a massive state-of-the-art Internet and Social Media campaign designed to mobilize millions of Americans to sign petitions urging passage of the SHUSH Act;
3) Writing op-eds, working national media, working highly-trafficked blogs and doing talk-radio shows to explain to Second Amendment supporters why passage of the SHUSH Act is a no-brainer.
Currently, any hunter who wants to add a suppressor to his or her hunting rifle is forced to pay a $200 tax, get fingerprinted like a common criminal and wait nine months just to get approval!
Not only that, but they have to register the suppressor with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE)!
And gun grabbers like Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) are spewing their anti-gun lies that suppressors “are used to commit crimes” without being able to point to a single statistic to prove this claim.
In fact, the use of suppressors by armed thugs is virtually ZERO because they’re not cheap and they add bulk to your firearm.
Thankfully, Sen. Lee and Rep. King are fighting to fully legalize suppressors for ALL law-abiding Americans in order to protect hearing, reduce noise complaints, and allow for a more accurate shot by reducing recoil and muzzle blast!
Most importantly, this is the next MAJOR step in rolling back federal restrictions on the Second Amendment.
That’s why I’m counting on you to sign your petition in support of the “Silencers Helping Us Save Hearing Act.”
And after signing, please consider making your most generous contribution of $50.
I know I’m asking for a lot, but this program won’t be cheap.
The SHUSH Act will likely be the biggest pro-gun advancement at the Federal level in many years.
We’ve made great strides this year, repealing Obama’s Social Security and Lead Ammo Bans, along with passing Constitutional Carry in 4 states.
That’s why I’m confident that if we stand together we can pass the SHUSH Act.
Legalizing suppressors will send a very loud and clear message to Washington D.C. that Second Amendment supporters are not going away, and that we will not be done until every single infringement on our God-given right to keep and bear arms is reversed.
That’s why I’m asking for $50.
But I understand that might be too much for you at this time, and if it is, please at least consider giving $25 or $25 after signing.
The SHUSH Act is the farthest reaching of the bills currently on the docket relating to suppressors.
Their bill is the only one that completely removes suppressors from government control, and treats them like the accessory that they are.
Similar bills treat suppressors like rifles.
That’s right. The same hoops you have to go through to get a rifle would be in place for suppressors under the old Hearing Protection Act (Which NAGR also supports).
While a laudable step in the right direction, these bills originated during the Obama years.
But with pro-gun Republican control of the House, Senate, and the White House we can and should fight for much more!
If we codify into law that suppressors should be treated like firearms, it sets a dangerous precedent if gun grabbers win back the White House.
Just imagine if someone like Elizabeth Warren becomes President in 2020 or 2024 and says: “Hey, gun rights supporters passed legislation regulating suppressors like firearms. Time to do the same for other firearms accessories.”
They would have the legal precedent to serialize and register every magazine or scope in America!
Imagine paying $400 for your next 15-round magazine!
But under the SHUSH Act this would not be the case. Suppressors would be treated like ANY other firearm accessory.
Because that’s exactly what they are. An accessory which promotes hunting and range safety!
And your National Association for Gun Rights is proud to work alongside pro-gun heroes Senator Lee and Representative King in this fight.
Unfortunately, too many anti-gun lawmakers want to continue to spew Sen. Murphy’s lies and water down this landmark pro-gun legislation.
Gun grabbers in Congress -- who can’t stand the concept of freedom -- are wetting their pants over the thought of American citizens being able to readily own simple accessories to make firearms safer and more enjoyable!
That’s why it’s imperative you sign your “Silencers Helping Us Save Hearing Act” petition in support of this pro-gun legislation.
Your petition will urge your Members of Congress to cosponsor and vote to pass the SHUSH Act today.
This should be a no-brainer.
After all, if you’re one of the millions of Americans who hunt, target shoot -- or just like to test your skill at the gun range occasionally -- you know how seriously you have to take hearing protection when shooting a firearm.
And the good news is, with your action today, I’m confident the Lee/King SHUSH Act (S.1505 and H.R.3139) can pass.
With the President’s son, Donald Trump Jr., voicing his AND his father’s full support for full deregulation of suppressors, the SHUSH Act has a strong chance.
And with the help of liberty-loving patriots like you, we’re prepared to fight like never before to ensure that other lawmakers in Congress get on board.
But this vote is likely to come down to the wire -- especially in the U.S. Senate.
And without grassroots support it may simply get watered down or killed.
And if it gets to the floor, just a handful of votes could decide it.
If you want Americans to be able to quiet their firearms, it’s up to us to make our voices LOUD.
Here’s how you can help:
*** Thank Senator Mike Lee and Congressman Steve King.
*** Please click here to sign your “SHUSH Act” petition in support of Sen. Mike Lee’s landmark pro-gun reform.
Finally, if you agree that Congress should pass the SHUSH Act please also consider making your most generous contribution of $50, $25, or $25 after signing.
If I can raise the resources, my plan is to light a fire under EVERY Senator and Congressman who claims to be pro-gun. And to overcome every gun grabber who dares oppose it.
Your donations and support allow us to continue to keep you informed and to fight for pro-gun legislation like Sen. Lee’s and Rep. King’s pro-gun bill.
Fellow Patriot, with time running out before the impending summer recess, I’m counting on your IMMEDIATE action.
National Association for Gun Rights
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Steve King and Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) have jointly introduced important gun rights legislation that removes silencers and mufflers from federal regulation. The legislation is known as the “Silencers Help Us Save Hearing” Act of 2017 (SHUSH Act). If enacted, the SHUSH Act would remove suppressors from federal regulation, ensuring that they are treated the same as other gun accessories. As a result, the purchase of a suppressor would no longer be subjected to the costly and burdensome process required under current law.
“Allowing gun owners to purchase suppressors absent federal regulation is important not just because they have a Constitutional right to do so, but because there is no rationale behind treating suppressors differently than other firearm accessories,” said King. “While liberal elites and Hollywood have demonized suppressors as something that criminals use, in truth suppressors serve a safe and rational purpose for law abiding gun owners like any other accessory. Suppressors reduce muzzle blast and recoil, improving accuracy and allowing for more effective communication on shooting ranges, or on a hunt, ensuring better safety. They should be treated like other gun accessories.”
Senator Mike Lee offered the following comments upon the introduction of his Senate companion legislation: “Suppressors can make shooting safer for the millions of hunters and sportsmen that exercise their Constitutional right to use firearms every year. The current process for obtaining a suppressor is far too expensive and burdensome. Our bill would remove these unnecessary federal regulations and make it easier for firearms users to protect themselves.”
The King-Lee legislation has the strong support of the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), a Second Amendment advocacy group composed of over 4.5 million members. NAGR President Dudley Brown has indicated that this bill will be a priority item for his organization. “Rep. King and Sen. Lee are champions for gun rights, and their joint legislation displays their dedication to restoring the Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding Americans,” said Brown. “Most in Congress who support silencer freedom want full deregulation, and that’s exactly what King and Lee are doing with H.R. 3139 and S. 1505.”
In the House of Representatives, Congressman King’s legislation has been designated H.R. 3139. Senator Lee’s Senate companion bill is designated S. 1505. H.R. 3139 has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee and to the House Ways and Means Committee. Congressman King is a member of the House Judiciary Committee.
