Governor DeSantis “Put it (Constitutional Carry) on my desk and I’ll sign it”

Mar 3, 2022

Panama City, FL –At a press conference today, Governor Ron DeSantis was asked about his stance on proposed Constitutional Carry legislation in Florida. His response was swift: “Put it on my desk and I’ll sign it.” (full press conference)

“We’re thrilled that Governor DeSantis has again pledged his support for Constitutional Carry, and now the legislature must act swiftly, pass Constitutional Carry through both chambers, and get it to Governor DeSantis as soon as possible,” said Matt Collins, Director of Legislation for Florida Gun Rights.

This marks the second time since December the Governor has publically said he will sign Constitutional Carry if the legislature gets the bill to his desk. During a reception the Florida GOP held at the Governor’s Mansion on Friday, December 3rd, Matt Collins was able to speak directly with Governor DeSantis, asking if he’d sign Constitutional Carry into law.

“If Constitutional Carry made your desk, would you sign it?” Governor DeSantis instantly responded, “Of course.”

Constitutional Carry is the basic principle that if you are legally eligible to possess a firearm, you should be able to carry that weapon openly or concealed, for self-defense, without having to obtain government “permission.”

21 states have adopted Constitutional Carry, including 5 states just this year, making it one of hottest pro-gun issues of the last decade.

“There’s no excuse for the Florida Legislature to continue to delay the passage of HB 103, Constitutional Carry. With Gov. DeSantis on board, and self-proclaimed pro-gun Republicans in control of both chambers, law-abiding gun owners in Florida deserve to see their elected officials restore gun rights in 2022.” concluded Collins.

Florida Gun Rights considers this issue a legislative priority, will be tracking this bill during the 2022 legislative session and expects all pro-gun members of the state legislature to co-sponsor and support HB 103.
